Description | Probate copy of the will of Matilda Atkinson of St. Peter's Square, Hammersmith, widow.
The will contains a codicil dated 23 October 1871. The will dates from 19 December 1863 and probate was proved 1 April 1873. The will refers to properties in Camden New Town and Blackheath, formerly belonging to her father James Kerr (deceased 1837). A portrait of her late husband John Atkinson is bequeathed to the Barbers Company of London, and in the codicil a bust of him is also bequeathed. They were to be placed in almshouses directed to be built by her late husband. According to the Barbers Company archivist, the portrait but not the bust are now in the possession of the Company; the almshouses were never built. Legatees include the artist George Frederick Watts |
