Notes compiled by the donor, a descendant of Samuel and Sarah Self.

James Self (1761-1826), born in Great Cheverell, Wiltshire, married a widow, Sarah How (c1752-1853), at St George, Hanover Square, in 1786. There were no children of the marriage.

In 1794 James Self established a bakery in King Street, Hammersmith, and was joined by Abraham Smith (1773-1846). Between 1805 and 1812 Abraham Smith took over the business which was passed down to his sons. Sarah Smith, party to the marriage settlement, was the daughter of Abraham Smith and his wife Eleanor.

Sarah Self, the wife of James Self, of Paradise Row, Hammersmith, died aged 71 years and was buried in St Paul's churchyard on 29 May 1823. After her death James Self made a will (see ND/P/60 for abstract) in which, among other bequests, he left £500 to Sarah Smith who was living with him. James Self died aged 65 years and was buried in St Paul's churchyard on 22 April 1826.

Samuel Self, party to the marriage settlement, was the son of William (1776-1808), brother of James Self. William was a market gardener in Chiswick and, after his death, his widow Mary arranged for Samuel to be educated at Christ's Hospital "with other poor boys". After his schooling he worked for a law stationer, Daniel Collins, in Cursitor Street, Chancery Lane.

Samuel Self married Sarah Smith on 8 October 1826 at St Mary Abbots, Kensington. They lived first in Aldgate then moved to Stepney in 1830 where they remained until their deaths in 1878 and 1886 respectively. Samuel became a clerk and later an accountant in a firm of West India merchants. The couple had three sons and six daughters.
