Description | The paper has been cut to retain the address and postmarks only
This type of handstamp, "Unpaid Penny Post", is only known for the years 1797 to 1801. It was put on at Fulham in the London District Penny Post, which, despite the name, charged more for distances over five miles. A charge of 2d had to be made on arrival at the destination in Westminster, so the latter office inscribed a large 2 on the front. The cover was also handstamped "1 o'Clock 31 De 98 NIGHT", when it arrived in Westminster |
