The 1841 census lists Richard Fortescue of independent means, his wife Elizabeth, son John and daughters, at Nightingale Cottage, New Road, (ref: HO 107/690/7 f35v).
This type of handstamp "Hammersmith WO [West Office] 1D PAID" was in use from 1840 to 1853, when people were given the choice of using the new adhesive stamp or the familiar hand-struck stamp.
The letter was also handstamped at Kingston on 31 July and at Andover on 1 August |
